IMEMAA - WONDERLAND(EFO001)

ESTONIAN FOLK ORCHESTRA

EFO, short for the Estonian Folk Orchestra, was founded by Tuulikki Bartosik when she had the idea to make a big band with traditional music students where all musicians were to be equal and together create music based on those conditions.

Tuulikki is a lecturer at both the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and the University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy and convinced the universities to support her band project and commit all their traditional music students to it. Thus EFO was born. With the help of Jonas Knutsson, her colleague at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Tuulikki helped the students find confidence, collaborate and find new expressions for their music, all of which has been uniquely arranged for, and in many cases written for, the band.

The music EFO performs has been reviewed as remarkable, probably as there is nothing in the world like it. It can be hard to imagine people today appreciating old, archaic traditional music, but here EFO surprises. Old Estonian traditional instruments and contemporary ones, a respectful foundation in traditional music, and infusions of influences from everything surrounding us today has produced a truly unique music style that has filled the members of the EFO with joy and pride.

REVIEWS

"Jänesehaake jäljendades juhib EFO teelise läbi muusikamaastiku, kus ammukuuldud viiside ja rahvapillide tuttavlike kõlade ümber ja sisse on iidsest lugupidaval ning samas tulevikku vaataval moel ehitatud kaasaegsete seadete toestavad karkassid või vana vormiga sobiv võrratu vooderdus."

"Albumi nimevalikuga on samuti täppi pandud. Usun, et orkestri muusika ja interpreteeringu erinäolisus on korrelatsioonis liikmete tuntavalt laia silmaringiga. Muusika edastab nende ausust ja siirust ning loob lõpptulemusena senikogematuid seoseid ja kujutluspilte."
